It might have been the worst Christmas of her entire life . . .
Alejandra and her children arrived in Toronto with little more than the clothes they were wearing. As refugees, everything was foreign and frightening. But Alejandra was determined to carve out a new life for her family far from the rampant crime and corruption that ruled her homeland of Mexico.
In urgent need of coats and warm clothing, a friend referred Alejandra to The Scott Mission. But once she passed through the Mission doors, Alejandra was astonished at the love and warmth she found. She and her little ones received much-needed personal items like coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, and even a box of food. The Scott Mission also referred her to a place where she received household items, like mattresses and furniture – all of which turned their house into a home!
But Alejandra would tell you that the greatest gift they received that day was a network of praying friends who genuinely care about her and her children. Still, she could hardly believe it when our staff quietly asked if she had Christmas gifts for her children . . . and then invited her to select some items from our Christmas toy store!
What might have been a cold, lonely, and grim Christmas, turned out to be one of the best ever! “I was so surprised!” Alejandra says, with a broad smile. “The toys were amazing, and when the kids got them they were so happy!”
Thanks to your support of The Scott Mission, Alejandra and her family are settling in to their new life here in Toronto. Her daughters loved attending our summer camp, and Alejandra cherishes her friendships and prayer partners among our staff. “You can get help and a lot of support here,” she says.
Alejandra’s gratitude for friends like you, who helped her family in their darkest hour, is always present, “I don’t know your names, but I pray for you and ask that God will bless you for helping others.”
On behalf of vulnerable families like this one, thank you for your ongoing support of The Scott Mission. Your gifts make happy endings like this one possible!
