It was a bitter cold January day when Mike came through the doors here at The Scott Mission.
The young man was obviously dangerously cold. The clothes and shoes he wore were not going to keep him warm—or alive—for long! He was in desperate need of shelter for the night.
“I remember the staff. How down-to-earth they were. I didn’t have a winter coat or winter boots and they went out of their way to find me stuff to wear. I remember enjoying the food, and then lying down on a mattress and looking up to see Psalm 23 on the wall . . . ‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.’”
Mike learned firsthand that The Scott Mission is not only a place of warmth and shelter, but also a peaceful place of hope and healing. With help from our staff and social workers, he got the counselling and medical attention that restored his health. He immersed himself in all of our life-enriching programs; growing in his faith and finding the courage to build bridges to reunite with his family.
Today, Mike has an apartment and deeply enjoys his renewed relationships, but The Scott Mission is still his “home away from home.” He eats, prays, and celebrates with us as the lives of others—once mired in homelessness, hopelessness, or addiction—are transformed by God to health, independence, and productivity.
“I’ve seen firsthand a lot of lives changed, and it wouldn’t have been possible without gifts from donors,” Mike says. “The Scott Mission is the best. It’s not just a shelter; they help you get back on your feet.”
Thank you for your support of The Scott Mission, which makes it possible for people in desperate need to find good hot meals and life-changing help when they need it most. Your ongoing support will pave the way for a fresh start in life for more hungry and hurting neighbours like Mike.
